In October 1865, just six months after the end of the U.S. Civil War, the side-wheeled steamer S.S. Republic was bound from New York to New Orleans with precious cargo of aid and supplies for the post-war reconstruction effort.
New Orleans Mint Mark
The ship never made it to the port in New Orleans, as it sank in a massive hurricane off the coast of Georgia. The ship and its cargo, which included a reported amount of $400,000 in gold and silver coins, came to rest 1,700 feet deep in the Atlantic Ocean. The ship and its cargo laid on the ocean floor for nearly 140 years before salvage experts found and brought to the surface a stunning treasure trove from the shipwreck, including thousands upon thousands of Civil War era $20 gold coins, $10 gold coins and silver half dollar coins in amazingly pristine condition.
