    1883-CC Rainbow Toned
    Morgan Silver Dollar in MS64
Signed by the 42nd U.S. Treasurer Anna Cabral

    About Toned Morgans:

Naturally toned Morgan Silver Dollars are rare and unique coins. Every rainbow toned Morgan will always be distinctive and no matter how many you see in your life-time no two will ever be the same. Natural toning like this can only be achieved through time and history, the rainbow tint that you see in these pictures is the natural patina of time, making it a real piece of history. Unlike artificially toned coins, which are viewed similarly to cleaned coins by collectors, this coin is graded, slabbed, and verified by NGC as NATURALLY Toned. The U.S. Mint has struck over 656 million Morgan silver dollars over the years and it is estimated that just around 10,000 Morgan dollars are known today that are naturally “rainbow toned.” Many of the estimated 10,000 toned Morgan dollars in existence today, around 75% or so, are just slightly toned.

    How Morgan Dollars Become Toned:

Morgan silver dollars were stored in canvas bags at the U.S. Treasury department. These canvas bags were infused with sulfur to reduce the damage caused by rats chewing on them. As a result, the Morgan dollars near the top of the bag were constantly bombarded with a minute amount of sulfur. The silver reacted with the sulfur to cause a thin film of silver sulfide on the coin’s surface. This thin film reflects and refracts light causing us to see a rainbow of colors on the coin’s surface.

    About the GSA Hoard:

The GSA Hoard is a select hoard of silver dollars that the U.S. Treasury offered from October 1972 to June 1974 for purchase, it mainly consisted of Carson City Morgan Silver Dollars. Prior to this, Carson City minted Morgans were extremely rare and hard to find. Thanks to the GSA Hoard, now many collectors have the opportunity to own these beautiful coins where before it would have been impossible.
